Fatty Flurry Fest is a celebration of Fat Bikes in North Idaho. If you have never tried a fat bike before, and wanted to try before you buy, here is your chance…for free. And if you already have a fatty, come hang with some fellow fat bikers and ride some cool trails.

Free Fat Bike Demo from 10:30-Noon (Surly & Salsa Fat Bikes, 18 years and older)

Group Rides: Starting at 12:30 pm. More info coming….

Post ride will feature some socializing and some sled pulling with some refreshments around the fire.

Some Notes: You will need a State Park Pass which can purchases on site for $5 or you can get an annual pass for your vehicle at the DMV beforehand. If you don’t have a bike with tires at least 3.8″ wide, leave it at home. There are porta potties that are nice and clean, but no running water. We will have a fire to keep you warm.

All activities will be at the lake parking lot/event pavilion.

Camping (if you are brave enough) is available, as well as ice fishing, snowshoeing, xc skiing, ice skating, sledding…you name it.

This is a “low pressure” social Fat Bike event.

Baker Highway (SR542) is known as one of the most scenic paved roads in the country and rarely is the highway closed to motorized vehicles from Glacier to Artist Point. With steep elevation and several switchbacks, this ride is not for the faint of heart, but the views are stunning. Experience the agony and the ecstasy!

The race begins at MP 35, 1/4 mile east of the check-in at Chair 9 Pizza & Bar.

In it’s 7th year, Global Fat Bike Day is just like it sounds, a day to celebrate and ride fat bikes. Technically, Saturday (12/7) is the day, but hey, many of us work on Saturdays, so we are declaring the whole weekend a Fat Bike Holiday.

Here is the plan:

* Meet up at the Schweitzer Roundabout (across from the fire station).

* Group Fat Bike Rides will leave parking lot at 12:30pm. We will ensure that the trails from the roundabout are groomed and ready for the day (weather depending of course). Take a intermediate and more advanced ride options available. There will be something for everyone. Maps will be provided.

* Need a fat bike for the group ride? Call Greasy Fingers ahead and reserve one of our rentals for $25 for the afternoon (available for pickup Saturday afternoon from the shop for $45 or Sunday starting at 12pm for $25).

* Do one or more rides, it’s up to you. The Greasy Fingers crew will have warm drinks and something on the bbq to warm your insides and a fire to warm your outsides.

Co-sponsored by Greasy Fingers Bikes N Repair and Schweitzer Mountain Resort

As we’ve mentioned before, the City of Spokane Valley will be preparing a Bike and Pedestrian Master Plan over the next year. Here’s the latest news:

The City was awarded funds to facilitate safety analysis, route location, and implementation from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants Program.  City staff including planning, development engineering and public works will complete the remainder of the Plan. They’ll assess existing routes and facilities for safety and make a prioritized list of improvement projects.

Extensive public outreach will be a large part of the Plan, as the City wants to be sure it represents and addresses the desires and needs of all citizens.  To be added to the Planning Department’s contact list for updates regarding the Bike and Pedestrian Master Plan, please contact Mary Swank at 509-720-5325 or at mswank@spokanevalley.org.

Preliminary information will be presented at an open house to be scheduled for the first quarter of this year.  Information regarding the Bike and Pedestrian Master Plan will be available on the website as it is developed, so check back often. They’ve already posted some cool maps and a work program.

Tomorrow is Transportation Advocacy Day in Olympiaa great day to get up to speed on bike/ped related legislature and write to your state rep.

Tons of Washingtonians are heading to Olympia to learn about the issues, meet with legislators and network with other advocates. Two hearings are scheduled for tomorrow on biking-related bills. Here’s the breakdown from Bike to Work Spokane, including what’s being talked about tomorrow in Olympia and more.

January 28: Transportation Advocacy Day in Olympia, House Transportation Committee Hearings on Bike Bills
This Thursday, Jan. 28 at 3:30pm, the House Transportation Committee will hold hearings on two bills that relate to biking, both of which are actively supported by the Cascade Bicycle Club, Bicycle Alliance of Washington, Transportation Choices and other groups working on active transportation issues.

HB 2911: Creating Complete Streets Grant Program
HB 3001: Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Education in Traffic Schools

A list of House Transportation Committee members: http://bit.ly/WaHTransp. Local legislators Alex Wood (3rd District), John Driscoll (6th District), and Matt Shea (4th District) serve on the committee.

If you’d like to submit comments, contact your state representatives: http://bit.ly/WaReps

The bills are being heard on Transportation Advocacy Day, when people from around the state descend on the capitol to meet legislatures and lobby for transportation policy that addresses the needs of all users, not just some.

Vulnerable User Bill in Legislature
Introduced in the 2009 session by the Cascade Bicycle Club but not passed into law, the Vulnerable Roadway User Bill would make it easier for prosecutors to hold drivers more accountable in collisions where they kill or seriously injure cyclists and pedestrians. The bill is supported by the Bicycle Alliance of Washington and other organizations.

It has been introduced in the House as HB 2774, and in the Senate as SB 5838.

Spokane County Street Connectivity Issue Open for More Comments
Spokane County Commissioners held a hearing Tuesday, Jan. 26, concerning a policy on connectivity.

Connectivity provides for walkability and bikability within a neighborhood and for adjacent neighborhoods. It also makes providing services to these neighborhoods such as police, transit and fire much easier and cheaper.

Commissioners Todd Mielke and Mark Richard voted to hold the topic open for further comment. You can submit an email through this link provided by Futurewise. The wording they developed for the form will give you an idea of the importance of the issue for cyclists and neighbors.

You can rewrite it to be in your own words, or just send an email yourself to commissioners Todd Mielke (tmielke@spokanecounty.org), Mark Richards (mrichards@spokanecounty.org), and Bonnie Mager (bmager@spokanecounty.org).

The FBC is having its first Full Moon Fiasco for the year on January 30th. If you’re unfamiliar with the routine, here it is from the horse’s mouth: “It may be a new year but we are doing things the same way. Meet at The Swamp at 8 pm on Saturday, January 30th and try to bring a dollar for a spoke card donation. We’ll take a short ride and go listen to loud music for the low, low price of Free Fifty-Free. Sound like a plan?”

For information, check out the FBC Spokane blog at fbc.blogspot.com. (Potty-mouth warning: FBC does not stand for “Friendly Bike Club.”)
