After 15 consecutive years as race director, Bloomsday Founder Don Kardong will retire after this year’s 43rd race set for Sunday, May 5.

Q: What are your favorite Bloomsday memories?

A: It’s hard to beat that first year, 1977. After months of planning, to be able to line up in a crowd and race down Riverside was a great thrill…to experience what had been just an idea as it became a reality was really exciting and gratifying.

Q: Which aspect of your role as race director have you most enjoyed?

A: The creative parts are the most fun: helping select the design for the finishers’ shirt, deciding what the souvenir gear will look like, reviewing the advertising and promotional items like the poster that our designers at Sigma create for us, and implementing new ideas.

Q: What will you most miss from your race director duties?

A:I’ll really miss interacting with all of our volunteers. I know I’ll still get to do that as a volunteer myself, but not as much as I am now as director.

Q: How do you envision Bloomsday in the future?

A: The basic heart of Bloomsday shouldn’t change. It will still be an opportunity for people to welcome spring [with] a giant gathering of their fellow citizens and visitors to the region—people who embrace the challenge of traveling 12 kilometers on foot. What will change are the embellishments, which I suspect will largely be technological. Things are developing so quickly in the running industry…. The ability to enhance the experience with any number of gadgets and feedback is going on at a rapid pace.

Q: What are your retirement plans?

A: I don’t have any specific retirement plans, but I’m already enjoying spending time with our four grandchildren, so I expect that to increase. And I’ll certainly be around the Bloomsday organization long after I retire as race director. //

Year after year, Bloomsday continues to elevate their kingdom above all other timed road races. 2018 is no different. For starters, there’s a new addition to the Bloomsday medals inspired by scenes along the course, an image anyone who’s done Bloomsday should recognize. The 2018 medal is a rendering of the VULTURE at the top of Doomsday Hill, dutifully performed each year since 1987 by Bill Robinson. For the eighth year, souvenir medals can be purchased during online registration or at the Bloomsday trade show.

Bloomsday has also streamlined their app that allows family and friends to use live tracking to locate participants. The app still does everything the app did last year: allowing instant access to the latest on event schedules, course maps, getting around, what to do in Spokane, results, social sharing and more. But the app is enhanced for alerts and tracking. Last but not least, Bloomsday has also created several Snapchat geofilters. From the start line to the finish line and everywhere in-between, participants will be able to add filters to their snaps. Bloomsdayrun.org. //

This Sunday, participants from all levels of running ability race the grueling 12K Qualchan XC, or, as it is called by insiders, “The Godawful Race.” Held at Spokane’s High Drive, notorious for its steep hills, overhanging trees, mud pits, and roots/rocks that trip many an unsuspecting runner, the strenuous Qualchan embodies true “cross-country” running. An additional challenge is the single-person wide trail throughout the entire race (except for the hundred meter asphalt finish). According to one runner, it is “the toughest race around here.”

As one of the smaller races of the Bloomsday Race Series, the Qualchan received a great turnout of 42 racers compared to previous years of only around 20 racers. Because of the Qualchan’s relatively small size, there are only two categories. Good job to our first place male Chris Morlan, with a 7-minute-mile average, who completed with a time of 52:25, as well as our first place female Rachel Bucklin who completed with a time of 1:03:07.

Congratulations for toughing out this killer race, for all those that participated!

Nearly 1,000 Spokane Area runners competed yesterday at Comstock Park:

(October 22, 2012)—Nearly 1,000 young runners will test their legs and determination today at the Bloomsday All City Elementary Cross Country Meet at Comstock Park. The meet, which begins about 4:00 p.m., is the culmination of the Elementary Cross Country Program organized in Spokane elementary schools this fall by Active4Youth, a nonprofit that works to provide after-school sports programs for Spokane-area children to combat childhood obesity.

“Bloomsday is proud to once again support this event,” said Lilac Bloomsday Association President Carol Hunter. “We want to continue to create an opportunity for kids to enjoy this lifelong sport.”
This is the fourth year the Lilac Bloomsday Association has sponsored the All City Cross Country Meet. The meet was part of the Spokane School District’s after school sports program until 2003, when it was discontinued due to budget constraints. Active4Youth was able to re-launch the program in 2009 after receiving funds from the Inland Northwest Community Foundation and the Charlotte Martin Foundation. Bloomsday’s sponsorship has also been crucial in restarting the program.
Young runners from Spokane schools have qualified for the Bloomsday All City Meet by either their place or time in the gender and grade division in which they competed at one of two zonal meets. Catholic schools have had their own systems for qualifying runners for the All City Meet. About 50 schools will have runners participating in one of six sections—K/1, 2nd grade, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th.

BLOOMSDAY NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

Check-In, T-Shirt Distribution, Lost & Found

Spokane, WA—With less than two weeks until the 36th running of the Lilac Bloomsday Run, organizers are eagerly seeking volunteers to help with Check-In, T-shirt distribution, and the Lost & Found area on race weekend.

“The success of Bloomsday is totally dependent on the support of nearly 5,000 volunteers,” said Bloomsday Race Director Don Kardong. “Most of our volunteer positions don’t require much, if any, prior experience, but it’s crucial that we fill all open positions to make sure things proceed smoothly before, during and after the run.”

For those interested in helping, here are a few details:

Number Distribution—This takes place at the Convention Center. Two shifts on Saturday, May 5th are especially in need of workers. No prior experience is necessary, and many of the volunteers in this area also run, jog or walk Bloomsday the next day. For more information, log on to Bloomsday’s web site (www.bloomsdayrun.org) and click the “Volunteers” button, then Number Distribution on the drop-down menu.

T-Shirt Distribution—About 200 volunteers are needed on Sunday morning, May 6th to help set up the T-shirt area, unload the shirts, and hand them out. For more information, log on to Bloomsday’s web site (www.bloomsdayrun.org) and click the “Volunteers” button, then T-Shirt Distribution on the drop-down menu.

Lost & Found—Organizers are looking for a group with at least six members to help in this area. The Lost & Found area is located in the parking lot north of City Hall on Bloomsday, and is only for lost kids. Volunteers should arrive around 7:00 a.m., and are done about 2:00 p.m. If you have a group that can help, please contact the Bloomsday Office at (509) 838-1579, ext. 10.

This year’s Bloomsday is scheduled for Sunday, May 6. Over 50,000 runners, joggers and walkers are expected to participate.

BLOOMSDAY ’12 SIGN-UPS POURING IN
36th Running Promises To Be Huge

Spokane, Washington—Maybe it’s the mild winter weather, or maybe it’s the fact that the only way to earn the coveted Bloomsday finisher shirt is by going the distance. Either way, entries for the 36th running of Bloomsday have been pouring in since online registration opened on January 1. And for those whose entries haven’t been part of the early surge, there’s still plenty of time to sign up for the popular 12-kilometer (7.46 mile) road race, which is scheduled for Sunday, May 6.

“We won’t know until race weekend exactly where our numbers are going to end up,” said Bloomsday Association President Carol Hunter. “But based on early interest it’s pretty clear that this year’s Bloomsday is going to be another big one.”

Along with online registration, printed entry brochures will soon be available at hundreds of locations in the Inland Northwest. Meanwhile, over 8,000 elementary school children have already begun getting in shape by participating in a Fit For Bloomsday…Fit For Life training program at one of 80 participating schools in the region. The Fit For Bloomsday program is now in its 27th year.

Most of the Bloomsday experience this year will be similar to what participants enjoyed in 2011, with everyone starting on Riverside Avenue and finishing at the north end of the Monroe Street Bridge, just above the Spokane River falls. But this year timing will be accomplished with the B-tag, the newest adaptation of RFID technology. Instead of removing the tag from the bib number and placing it in the laces of the shoes, participants will leave the B-tag on their bib numbers. Timing company EMMI believes the B-tag is even more accurate than the D-tag Bloomsday has used the past two years. And to take advantage of the technology, participants this year will be given a “Time Up Doomsday” in their results after the run.

Bloomsday has added additional technological enhancements to the experience this year. Online registration has been optimized to make registration smoother for smart phones and tablets, and QR codes on bib numbers will give a direct link to each individual’s results beginning on Monday after the run. Entrants also have the option of purchasing digital training and finisher “medals” during online registration, which can be posted on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites.

Another change this year will be with the Bloomsday School Challenge, now in its third year. The School Challenge, which matches four-person competitive teams of teen runners from area middle schools and high schools, will allow fifth and sixth grade teams to enter this year in non-competitive divisions.

To help people get ready for this year’s 12-kilometer challenge, Bloomsday has once again partnered with Step Up Spokane—a local non-profit which is encouraging residents to engage in daily physical activity and healthier eating year-round—to offer training programs for Bloomsday participants. In addition, sign up for two national training programs—Focus-N-Fly and the Lydiard Running Wizard—is available during online registration.

Those entering online for this year’s Bloomsday Run, which represented over 80% of the field in 2011, will continue to enjoy features that are only available to online entrants. That includes an email about a week before Bloomsday weekend letting them know their race number and the color of their starting group, as well as the option to keep family and friends together in the same starting group. Online entrants may also want to join Bloomsday’s Facebook fan page, which currently boasts over 12,000 fans. Entrants can also sign up for regular tweets from Bloomsday’s Twitter account.

Along with the run itself, this year’s Bloomsday weekend will feature the seventh annual Marmot March, a non-competitive 1.2-mile kids’ event in Riverfront Park on the day before the run. The Marmot March is for children second grade and younger and their parents,. The Marmot March is sponsored by Franz Bakeries and is open for the first 300 children who sign up.

Also on Bloomsday weekend, the Trade Show, which is held in conjunction with Check-In at the Spokane Convention Center, will once again have a variety of displays and activities for those interested in health and fitness. After the run participants can enjoy a variety of post-race festivities and food from the Bloomsday Food Court in Riverfront Park. For those looking for memorabilia of their Bloomsday experience,a variety of souvenir gear with the Bloomsday logo will also be offered during online registration and at the Trade Show.

After successfully composting over a ton of discarded water cups in each of the past three years, Bloomsday participants will once again be encouraged to help reduce, reuse and recycle as part of the Bloomsday’s “Getting Greener” initiative. Participants are also encouraged to support Bloomsday’s official 2012 charity, Boys & Girls Clubs of Spokane County. As a non-profit leader in youth development, Boys & Girls Clubs of Spokane County is dedicated to inspiring and enabling all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Bloomies can support the Boys & Girls Clubs by adding a donation when they sign up online or through the mail.

While there have been many changes in Bloomsday in recent years, some things remain the same. Competition at the front end promises to be fierce, as world-class runners and wheelchair racers battle for prize money, which includes a $20,000 U.S. citizen’s purse. In addition, top age-group runners will vie for medals, local stars will hope to earn a free trip to Atlanta’s Peachtree Road Race, and businesses will scramble for top honors among over 250 teams in the Corporate Cup, which is sponsored again this year by Orthopaedic Specialty Clinic.

For those farther back in the pack, on-course entertainment and the cheers of spectators should help make the journey fun and memorable. During its thirty-six years on the Spokane scene, Bloomsday has become a favored spring gathering place for families and friends, most of whom complete the course and collect the coveted finisher’s shirt, the color and design of which are kept secret until the finish line.

Major Sponsors of Bloomsday ’12 include Washington Trust Bank, New Balance, Premera Blue Cross, Providence Holy Family Hospital & Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, Franz Bakeries, Jerzees, Sports Authority, Safeway, Microsoft, The Inlander, Corporate Cup Sponsor Orthopaedic Specialty Clinic, and a new sponsor, Itron, who will also be on the bib numbers. Bloomsday is also supporting the efforts of the Spokane Regional Health District again this year by being designated an official tobacco-free event. As an event that promotes health and fitness, Bloomsday encourages participants and spectators alike to help keep all events and venues smoke-free on Bloomsday weekend.

Online registration for Bloomsday ’12 is open at www.bloomsdayrun.org, and printed entry brochures will soon be available at locations throughout the Inland Northwest. The on-time entry fee for Bloomsday is $17.00 this year, the lowest in the nation for a major running event. Mailed entries must be postmarked by April 17 to avoid the late entry fee of $35.00. In addition, two local Sports Authority stores will be taking entry forms from now until the entry deadline of April 17, and online registration at the $17.00 fee will be available until April 22.
